    • 16th century fortified home - formerly the home of the Brodie of Brodie - now a Scottish National Trust property.

    • 14th century castle, linked with MacBeth by Shakespeare.

  • Culloden Battlefield

    • site of the last major battle fought on British soil

  • Duntulm Castle

    • the ruins of Duntulm Castle stand right at the top of the Trotternish peninsula on Skye. This was a stronghold of the Clan MacDonald and was abandoned by the clan around 1730.

  • Dunvegan Castle

    • the ancestral home of the Clan MacLeod on the Isle of Skye, still in use today. The castle is open to visitors all year round - opening times are shown on the website.

  • Eilean Donan Castle 

    • the famous castle on Loch Duich which used to feature in the "balloon" sequences on BBC television. Open to visitors.

  • Fort George

    • massive and impressive fort built in the 1760's and still in use as a barracks today. The ramparts form an excellent vantage point from which to look for dolphins which regularly visit the Moray Firth.

  • Glenelg & Bernera Barracks

    • ruins of a barracks built by General Wade in the early 1720's.

  • Strome Castle

    • ruins of a castle built in the 15th century to guard the Strome Narrows.

  • Urquhart Castle

    • an imposing castle on the shores of Loch Ness.

  • Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve

    • Britain's first National Nature Reserve - established in 1951.

  • Corrieshalloch Gorge

    • 1-mile long gorge with spectacular waterfalls - the Falls of Measach.

  • Inverewe Gardens

    • despite being on a latitude more northerly than Moscow, these gardens are home to exotic plants from all over the world, courtesy of the warm currents of the Gulf Stream.

  • The Hydroponicum

    • at Achiltibuie, north west of Ullapool. The premier centre for the demonstration of soil-less growing in the UK.

  • Shards Stained Glass

    • at Arrina on the Applecross coast road, about 10 miles from Shieldaig and 15 miles from Applecross. Manufacturers and suppliers of a unique and unusual range of stained glass suncatchers.

  • Highland Museum of Childhood

    • located in the Old Station at Strathpeffer

    • for mainstream theatre productions in Inverness.

    • an all-round water experience for all - from serious swimmers to those wishing to relax in the poolside spa.

  • a neighbouring area to Lochcarron with spectacular mountain scenery. Very attractive to walkers and climbers.

    • has its own distillery - the first private distillery licence issued for 190 years!

    • at Muir of Ord, just about the nearest distillery to Lochcarron.

  • Glenmorangie Distillery

    • at Tain, just south of the Dornoch Firth

  • Dalmore Distillery

    • on the banks of the Cromarty Firth overlooking the Black Isle. Its malt whisky has a characteristic full flavour and body, and a long lingering aftertaste. A classic Highland malt.
